Ten years, ten more...

We can’t believe that we just wrapped up our tenth year of Change The World: Mission Madisonville!  As I sit and reflect over this year’s trip, I am amazed at God’s faithfulness through CTW.  It’s crazy to think about how deep our roots are growing each year.  We are seeing relationships being built like never before, families coming together, and kids coming to know and accept Jesus into their hearts.

The most significant impact that the Madisonville community has on our leaders is the relationships that develop and grow during each trip.  This year, some of our leaders met the kids for the first time, others have seen babies grow up into fourth graders, and some are somewhere in between.  What makes CTW so special is that we return to the same place each year which gives our leaders the opportunity to be a recurring presence in the lives of the kids.  The ability to come back to the same place spurs leaders to apply multiple years in a row because of the impact the community has made on them and the relationships they’ve built with the kids.

We have compiled a list of stories that just scratch the surface of the amazing life change that happens to the leaders and children of Madisonville.  We are already anticipating next year’s Madisonville trip and can’t wait to continue the work of building relationships with the community.  This is only the beginning…  Here’s to ten more years in Madisonville!

“Train children to live the right way, and when they are old, they will not stray from it.”

–Proverbs 22:6

“CTW Missions provides the unique opportunity to be able to serve the young children of Madisonville, Texas along with the older community.  Each year, I am reminded of the privilege it is to go into the nursing homes and spread the love of Jesus to people who may not feel very loved.  Some of the residents in the nursing home do not get visitors anymore and the joy that fills that place when we come visit is incredible.  It continually reminds me that everyone needs Jesus, young or old.” – Patricia Fant (6th year leader)

“Change The World Missions gives me the rewarding opportunity to love on kids who may not hear from anyone in their lives that they have potential, that they are leaders, or that they are deeply loved.  The most significant impact that CTW has on me is the opportunity for me to go to the same place every year and continue the process of deepening relationships with the same kids as the year before.  Each year, CTW solidifies the special calling God has placed on my life to share the love of Jesus to children.” – Casey Tate (3rd year leader)

“Teaching the Bible story pushed me outside of my comfort zone but the kids made it so easy with their encouragement and love.  I leave Madisonville every year feeling amazed by God’s work and inspired by these special kids.” – Rebecca White (3rd year leader)

“This year at CTW, I watched one of the kids in my group go from wanting to fight every day to praying over the group by the end of the week.  God changed this kid’s life and gave him strength to know he is a leader and he is loved.” – Jacob Frisbie (5th year leader)

Where it all began...

It was the summer of 2008 and I had just completed my senior year of high school. I had been in church since the fourth grade and from Awana’s to youth group I found great joy in being a leader. I always admired those older than me who loved the Lord and served Him. I had this extreme desire to find my place, my purpose in God’s great plan. With what seemed like little planning and who knows what kind of budget, we loaded up a few vehicles to head to a small town in the middle of nowhere Texas. All we knew was our youth pastor, Zach, grew up in this town and felt like he had some unfinished business to attend to. He wanted to pour into his childhood community that was full of people he loved dearly and wanted to bring us all along.

I don’t think any of us knew what we were truly walking into. We had all been a part of vacation bible school and had gone to various church camps but this time: WE were the VBS. WE were the summer camp. We didn’t have a name or a title. We just went into a city full of strangers and loved, played, danced, and sang. What started as a small camp-like setting for an apartment complex in Madisonville, Texas eventually spread into a city-wide crazy, good time.

Each day there was a different craft, bible story, recreation game and of course: SNACKS! We soon learned the importance of water as we were in south Texas and surely y'all can guess how hot that truly is. We split the kids up into age groups and had different rotations throughout the day. Each group had a leader or two and each station had a few leaders running the activity. Each day was also filled with music, LOTS of music.

In the afternoons our group split into smaller groups to do various community projects. My personal favorite was going to a few local nursing homes and showing some TLC to the residents. We all got to hear so many life stories and painted the womens' fingernails. We also broke out in song at the nursing home. I quickly learned that no matter where you go, a love of music is universal. Young and old alike can relate to music.

A few years later we went to an in-between house called House of Hope and did clean-up projects. We also had a crawfish boil and worshiped together. I didn’t notice this pattern until I sat down to write this post. I’m realizing that no matter what you’ve done or where you’ve been, you can always find a reason to sing. People of all ages, all different backgrounds can find common ground and give praise to the Lord who created us all. Perhaps my favorite year was the second year, in 2010. We drove a few hours south of Madisonville to inner-city Houston and partnered with a ministry that serves the homeless. I got to meet a sweet woman named Dorothy and hear her life story.

Fast forward eight years later and we are super official. We are a registered non-profit organization with a name and a mission statement. Change The World Missions is the catalyst of change that builds communities by developing leaders within said communities. Since we are only able to spend one week out of the year in the city of Madisonville, we want to do them an even greater service year round. By casting Hope and forming long lasting relationships, we strive to equip our friends with the tools to change the world; the tools it takes to change their tomorrow.

In less than two months, a team of youth and young adults will head to Madisonville, Texas. We have all learned and grown so much. There are still some plans to finalize and lots of prayers to be prayed. We are encouraging people to share our mission before we go. By visiting the "take action" tab, you can invest in this God-given dream. As with most things, money is a vital and necessary tool. We are excited that you would consider being a part of this mission. I’ve always heard it said that those who cannot go, SEND. Thank you for sending us forward with your prayers and financial contributions.

Change The World Missions- Madisonville Edition

In just under two months, teenagers from across America will storm the city of Madisonville, TX. We have been gearing up for this for quite some time now and we couldn't be more excited. We can't wait to be back with the community that we have been partnering with for ten years now.  Some of the most dynamic teens will join arms for one week to bring Hope to the community of Madisonville.  Life change is what we look forward to the most. Why...? Because once you see it, you realize there is nothing better.
